St. Andrews Residents Appeal to Town Council by Reg Coffey

Full house 23Mar16

Long Sault – On Wednesday night St. Andrews residents filled the council chambers as Earl DePass presented an appeal to South Stormont Township Council to reconsider building a community hall for their village. The taxpayers from the St. Andrews West area found out that the plans for the much needed new fire station did not include the community hall that the previous council had agreed to in principle. Even the land to build the hall on was purchased in anticipation of a combined fire station and community hall.

Earle DePass presented a well thought out appeal on behalf of the St. Andrews West community group. He outlined the history of the issue and highlighted the many benefits that a community hall would provide to the area. A petition of over 600 names of local residents was presented to the council to show the wide support for the proposed hall. Mr. DePass indicated that Federal infrastructure money was available for this project and the St. Andrew’s Community group would be more than willing to help access it, but only the township can apply for the moneys. At the end of the presentation Mayor Jim Bancroft stated that they would consider the request but it would be up to the township staff to find the resources.
