Fire Department Long Service Recognized at Council Meeting by Reg Coffey

Long Sault – Last night at the scheduled township council meeting the several members of the South Stormont Fire and Emergency Services were recognized for their long terms of service. Of particular notice was the retirement of Deputy Chief Lee Bethune after 25 years of service. A special award was given to Mrs Bethune for her years of support to Chief Bethune’s service.

A number of recipients of the awards were not available since they were on duty.

Chris Laplante – 15 years of service, Ingleside

Randy Tyo – 10 years of service, Newington

Matthew Barkley – 10 years of service, Ingleside

Pierre Quesnel – 10 years of service, Ingleside

John Montgomery – 25 years of service, Newington

After the council meeting the fire fighters held a reception at the Long Sault Marina restaurant to celebrate the awards and Deputy Chief Bethune’s retirement.

The rest of the meeting was dedicated to routine administration reports. During the treasurers report Mayor McGillis asked Treasurer Johanna Barkley to explain the operational debt of the township for clarification. This was an issue that was brought up during the All Candidates Debate at the Lancer Centre on Monday night by Deputy Mayor Hart.
