Mayor Bryan McGillis

Mayor Bryan McGillis

SSN – We are asking all candidates to fill out our mini survey so the public can get to know them better.  We are posting them as they arrive in chronological order.

Next up is two term mayor Mr. Bryan McGillis.

1) Who are you?  I am a life-long resident and 7th generation family from a dairy farm on Myers Road. I graduated in the trades at St. Lawrence College. I worked at Domtar for 25 years; I owned and operated two businesses in South Stormont.

I became interested in Municipal politics at the age of 27 when I was successful with my first election in 1988. In 2006, I was elected as Mayor. In 2010, I was acclaimed as Mayor and now I am seeking re-election.

I play a number of instruments and started playing in a band at 15 years old and continue to play today for different events including many charity events. I enjoy spending time with family and our two grandchildren.

2) Why are you running for office? I have a long standing passion for our community and am very thankful to every volunteer who spends countless hours building our beautiful thriving municipality into a great place to live, work and raise a family.

I feel I have been blessed to have had the opportunity to make a positive difference for the residents and businesses in South Stormont. I want to continue to create more economic and residential growth that we have experienced in my years as Mayor.

I want to create more partnerships like we have done in the past with the OPP and new St. Lawrence Medical Clinic. These investments through lease agreements will create revenue for the municipality and keep our doctors and new pharmacy in our community for many more years. The new EMS post will be built in 2015 and will create a quicker emergency response time for all our residents.

3) What are the three best things about our community?

  1. We have a great location, highway 401 goes through South Stormont, highway 138 to the 417, the railway, USA border, and waterfront.

  2. Lower taxes compared to other municipalities in eastern Ontario. This is a huge attraction to our municipality in terms of industry (commercial and industrial) and residential. All our vacant buildings are now full and will create many new jobs in the community in the near future.

  3. Volunteers are the backbone of any community.

4) What are your three priorities to improve South Stormont?  I will continue to attract industry and commercial businesses to the township, improve our infrastructure as well as our focus on recreation, parks, programs and equipment.

5) Who was your hero as a child?  The Duke, John Wayne.

6) If you could brand the South Stormont of the future in one word what would that word be?  Unlimited!
